The RC time constant, Tau, is the time it takes to charge a capacitor to about 63% of its supply voltage. Five times the time constant is the time to charge the capacitor to within 1% of the supply. The time constant is calculated by multiplying the system’s resistance R by its capacitance C. The sensor capacitance will create a steep curve and quick charging time as shown in the illustration.
