When comparing against a flyback architecture to develop isolated supplies, there are five key transformer driver benefits: simpler designs, flexible designs, smaller transformers, reduced EMI, and integrated features. Simpler designs use fewer external components than would be required due to a non-feedback loop architecture. Designs are more flexible because the external transformer winding ratio defines isolated output voltage, and also allows a selection of flexible isolation voltages. The transformer driver’s forward converter topology does not store the power in the transformer, while a flyback does store the power, therefore smaller, lower cost transformers may be used. As a flyback uses a varying PWM topology, a transformer driver has improved EMI predictability due to a consistent 50% switching duty cycle. The transformer includes such integrated features as spread spectrum, Fault detection, overcurrent limiting, and over-temperature protection.
