As isolated power supply designs are often complex and can be difficult to design, the MAX13253 helps to simplify isolated power supply designs. Applications include industrial, medical, and metering applications which require isolated power to protect the internal system power supplies against applications with outside interface connections such as RS485, RS232, CAN, and USB, and I/O modules such as analog input or digital input modules. Analog Devices' transformer drivers provide a simple solution for generating isolated power supplies. By choosing the windings on an external transformer, the user can easily define the secondary isolated output voltages. Designers may know about the Analog Devices MAX253/MAX256 family of transformer drivers; the new MAX13253 was developed to provide higher performance and focus on integration in a small 3 x 3 package size. With integrated spread spectrum technology, customers can eliminate using an external spread spectrum oscillator to reduce EMI spikes. The integrated current limiting and fault detection help to provide a robust isolated power supply design which could be difficult to design with discrete architectures. The 1 A current capability enables meeting USB (500 mA) ISO power requirements while delivering a low Ron and up to 90% efficiency. The simple architecture of the MAX13253, along with higher integration simplifies scalable, robust, and flexible isolated power designs and will enable faster time to market for the end customer. An evaluation kit with a pre-developed 1 A compliant Halo transformer is available. Pre-developed MAX253 transformers may be utilized if a customer requires lower current and wants to upgrade to the MAX253.
