ADCs can be damaged if the inputs are exposed to voltages beyond the power supply rails. Given the long cables of some RTDs, there is the potential of a short circuit of cables to a power supply voltage, either in installation or operation. There are techniques that can be implemented to address this design challenge, although they can effect accuracy and of system cost.
