A four wire RTD implements a Kelvin connection, with two conductors used to force the bias current and two dedicated to measure the voltage. This connection allows the user to virtually eliminate errors due to cable resistance as long as the bias current is sufficiently low. For very long cable runs, it may be desirable to reduce cable cost, weight, and etc. by implementing a three wire RTD. If the resistance in each of the three leads is equal, the effects of cable resistance can be reduced with this connection scheme, although the signal conditioning is more complex. For short cable runs between the RTD and force/sense electronics, a two wire connection can provide sufficient accuracy provided the resistance is low enough.
