In the Device selection stage, the Master or host can choose from a variety of ROM commands to select a device. Here is a look at some of these ROM commands. If there is only one Slave device on the 1-Wire bus; the Master can issue a Skip ROM command to skip device identification and begin executing device function commands, or it can execute the Read ROM command to read the Slave device’s unique ID. The Match ROM command is used to select a specific device whose ROM ID is known to the Master. The Resume command allows the host to continue executing function commands with a device selected by a preceding ROM command. The Overdrive Skip ROM command is executed when the host knows that there is only one device on the network and a selection is not required. At the end of this command, the 1-Wire device on the bus will be put into overdrive communication mode. The Search ROM command is used with a multi-drop configuration when the Master does not know the number of devices on the network and their unique ID’s. Repeated passes of search ROM are required to find all devices on the 1-Wire bus.
