Another important requirement of IEC60601-1-8 is that the alarm must be able to produce three different priority sounds: high, medium, and low priority. The intent of this requirement is for medical equipment to be able to issue an alarm sound that corresponds to the urgency of the patient’s condition. For example, if the medical equipment detects that the patient requires immediate attention, the high priority alarm sound will be issued; if the medical equipment detects that the patient needs attention, but not urgently, the low priority alarm sound will be broadcast. IEC60601-1-8 has very specific timing requirements for the three different priority sounds. The sounds have beeping patterns to convey the urgency of the patient condition. The high priority sound consists of a complex beeping pattern of ten quick beeps that repeat, the low priority sound consists of two slow beeps that may or may not repeat. Finally, the medium priority sound has a beeping pattern that is in between the high priority and low priority.
