MOV-Slide7

A transient is a very narrow disturbance on the normally steady voltage bus. If there is an MOV protection device installed between the line and ground, the disturbance will cause a current to flow in the MOV and the overvoltage condition will be drastically reduced. The excess energy will get dissipated as heat inside the MOV before it has a chance to move into sensitive circuitry downstream.
