These are definitions that need to be understood before an MOV selection can be made; and most are self explanatory. The first point, though, may appear to be incorrect, but it is true that the continuous voltage rating should be 10% to 20% higher than the maximum circuit voltage encountered. UL has chosen a 15% factor and calls it the MCOV, or Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage. Following this selection criteria will ensure enough operating margin to keep leakage currents from exceeding the MOV conduction point. For example, on a 120VAC line, a 150V MOV should be selected. Some users do not follow this guideline, but it should be adhered to in order to avoid premature MOV failure.
