Here a Gas Discharge Tube that has been added in series with the MOV going from the hot line to ground. Many consumer products have a grounded metal cabinet which can become a shock hazard if the MOV leakage current becomes high. This problem is completely solved by the GDT which will electrically disconnect the MOV from ground while the GDT is not conducting. Any potential leakage current from the MOV is thereby prevented and the shock hazard is eliminated. During a high voltage transient above the GDT threshold, it will instantly begin conducting and reestablish the MOV connection to ground.
