The Littelfuse three chip “Y” configuration exhibits lower capacitance because the devices are placed in series. Circuit analysis also proves that the capacitance unbalance to ground is also significantly better than a two chip design. Most designs use three chips with the same breakdown voltage resulting in the same breakdown voltage value between any two pins. Because the center chip is common to the wing chips, breaking down either side will cause the other side to break down as well. This is very useful in transformer coupled circuits. Additionally, placing a single component instead of three is a cost advantage.
