Using tools like MathCAD, it’s possible to calculate the pulse by pulse switching parameters of the converter, using these parameters and the derived inductor value. The ripple current, the MOSFET duty cycle and diode duty cycle should be calculated under the low line conditions. While the average current of the diode is not very high, due to the extreme duty cycle difference, the peak diode current is quite high, being the same as that of the peak inductor ripple current and MOSFET switch current. This illustrates the stress on the diode, and why Boost diode selection is a critical factor in the CCM PFC design.
