What is Power Factor Correction? Why is it needed? For what equipment and locales is it mandated by government regulation? These are all important questions to consider. This module will cover these questions and introduce the concepts of boost PFC active filter power conversion for both low power and high power applications. Additionally, it will provide a brief introduction to the topologies commonly used and the control concepts. Last, it will discus why wide input range PFC has some particular challenges for both the boost switch MOSFET as well as the rectifier diode, and how this creates opportunities for CoolMOS™ transistors and 3rd Generation Silicon carbide diodes.
