Unmanaged Ethernet switches do not require any configuration or any input from the user. In other words, they work as “out of the box” devices. Unmanaged switches are considered “Plug and Play” devices since they will work as soon as power is provided and an Ethernet connection is established. Since the user has no means of configuring an unmanaged switch, the data traffic through the switch is managed according to the MAC address and port assignment table. An unmanaged layer 2 Ethernet switch learns MAC addresses of the connected devices, and based on that information, it forwards the data to the appropriate locations. Unmanaged switches do not have MAC or IP addresses since all they do is filter and forward Ethernet frames. Lastly, unmanaged Ethernet switches are significantly less expensive compared to the fully managed Ethernet switches.
