Industrial Ethernet switches usually have a very robust metal enclosure to protect them from any mechanical damage. Industrial switches also have a wide operating temperature range for extreme temperature applications. A fan-less design makes industrial Ethernet switches much more reliable since there is no possibility of a potential fan failure. Industrial switches are designed to be as compact as possible, since available space in the industrial enclosures or control cabinets is often very limited, so smaller devices are preferred. All industrial Ethernet switches support a majority of the industrial Ethernet protocols, such as PROFINET and EtherNet/IP. Industrial Ethernet switches usually have one or more industrial approvals that allow these switches to be used in particular market segments. One example would be a DNV approval, which is required in marine and ship building applications.
