The benefits of shielded vs. non-shielded inductors should be considered when making a selection. Shielded inductors offer low magnetic radiation for applications where low interference is deemed to be critical. The fewer number of winding turns, the lower the DC resistance. In contrast, non-shielded construction may be noisy. However, its inductance roll-off at DC current is much slower than a shielded inductor in a similar physical size. A higher number of turns are needed on non-shielded inductors which produces higher DC resistance than shielded inductors for the same amount of inductance.
