A typical TLS handshake includes client and server hello. The client initiates contact to the server and proposes a cipher suite. The server will respond by confirming the cipher suite is supported and sending its certificates and public keys. The server can optionally request a client certificate, but in the current state of the internet this is often not done and is an optional part of the TLS specification. The client will respond with its public key and again optionally its certificate. This process is finalized by both the client and server confirming that the handshake has been completed.
