In summary, TLS is a secure communication protocol and secure connection between clients and servers. In order to really secure transmissions, three components are required; client authentication, secure storage of keys and sensitive data, and encryption. TLS is currently missing a couple of those key pieces; it does not have strong client authentication or secure storage of keys and sensitive data. The Microchip ECC508A is applicable to IoT security and helps to harden TLS security. In an IoT device it can serve as a hardware ID badge to enable mutual authentication via the cloud service. The ECC508A is hardware protected and performs ECDH key agreement for encryption and privacy and provides hardened secure storage for keys, certificates, and trusted root CA sensitive data. Microchip's ECC508A is a cryptographic co-processor, or authenticator, which allows even low-cost MCUs to perform strong end-to-end mutual authentication. Microchip offers libraries that support Open SSL and WolfSSL implementation, software security packages that can take advantage of the functionality of the ECC508A to harden the security of TLS, and maximize the security of the communication layer.
