Power Cords and Cord Sets Slide 6

Power cords are limited in their current carrying capacity by the gauge of wire that is used as the inner conductors, as well as other factors such as the temperature rating of the insulation. Power cord types – SJT, SPT-1, SPT-2, and SVT adhere to the current chart as shown. Since SVT cords are usually constructed with 18 AWG their current rating is 10 A. 14 AWG cord itself is actually rated up to 18 A but the NEMA 5-15P connector is rated at 15 A – so a cord set constructed with 14 AWG and a NEMA 5-15P connector is rated at 15 A.
