In its most basic form the map can be thought of as a simple lookup table, where the x-value at the input serves as an index to look up a y-value for the output. Some DDSs, however, rely on a computational engine rather than a lookup table. In fact, Analog Devices’ high speed, high performance DDS products all use digital circuits comprising a proprietary computational algorithm. It is related to the CORDIC algorithm, but with modifications requiring less hardware. Less hardware means less power consumption when using CMOS technology, thereby enabling higher operating frequencies.
