Introducing MagnoPath A Flexible and Magnetic System for Wearable Robots
2024-10-29 | By Jorvon Moss
The MagnoPath system is a design approach I developed to improve the aesthetics and functionality of wearable robots. It integrates three key components: a flexible design, magnets, and an accelerometer to enhance the look and comfort of robots worn on the body.
The human shoulder is a complex, rounded joint that slopes downward at an angle of about 15 to 20 degrees, which makes fitting wearable robots a challenge. While solutions like GoPro custom straps exist, they often slip or struggle to support heavier devices. I’ve faced these limitations myself, which led me to create this method to achieve a more secure and comfortable wearable robot. Here's how the MagnoPath system works:
1. Flexible Design: Since the shoulder is rounded, a flexible robot design that contours to the shoulder’s shape provides a more comfortable fit. Think of how a pill bug or segmented worm moves, or the concept behind 3D-printed flexible structures. By allowing your robot to bend and flex, you can ensure it stays in place and feels more natural when worn.
2. Accelerometer for Stability: I've incorporated an accelerometer into my robot, Digit, to maintain proper head orientation. This feature keeps the robot’s head upright and balanced as you move, preventing it from looking awkward or toppling over while you're wearing it. I typically use the Arduino Nano BLE 33 Sense V2 for this purpose, as it has a built-in accelerometer.
3. Magnetic Mounting: The magnets used in this system need to be very strong, with a large surface area for a secure hold. While they offer a reliable way to attach your robot to clothing or metal accessories, it's important to handle them carefully, especially if you have a pacemaker or if there's a risk of pinching your fingers. By integrating powerful magnets into your robot and pairing them with magnetic or metal mounting points on your clothing, you can ensure the robot stays in place while still allowing for easy removal when needed.
Together, these elements make the MagnoPath system an effective solution for creating wearable robots that are both practical and visually appealing.
Parts I commonly use are listed below.
