External adapters offer several advantages over traditional internal power supplies. First, they do not require PCB space inside a product which reduces the product’s over all size. Additionally, the conversion from AC voltage to DC voltage is accomplished outside the equipment; meaning no live AC inside of the product. Having the power supply located outside the product can also alleviate some regulatory considerations and design changes to the product can be accomplished independent of the power supply. Finally, the cost of an external adapter is typically less than its internal equivalent.
