The demand for improved energy efficiency and alternative energy sources has called for an accelerated introduction of products such as hybrid electric vehicles, solar converters and wind generators. A DC to AC inverter is a key component in all of these applications. The inverters require filter and DC link capacitors with higher operating voltage and ripple current capability to support the need of increasing power demand. Other important capacitor parameters include low inductance to limit the switching transient voltages, high frequency capability, and expanded working temperature range. Long expected life, low dissipation factor and ESR, high stability of the capacitance value over time, the ability to withstand high peak voltages, improved mechanical strength, low weight, and packaging flexibility are also critical parameters for a mid-power electronics capacitor. The film capacitor comes closest to satisfying these requirements.
