LED Driver Overview Slide 23

There are two methods used for dimming LEDs. The first is by simply reducing the DC current flowing through the LED. This is the simplest and most straight forward method of dimming. An alternative method is pulse width modulation, or PWM. This method maintains the same peak current flowing through the LED and accomplishes dimming by switching the LED on and off at a fixed frequency with varying pulse widths, thereby reducing the average current and apparent brightness of the LED.
