LED Driver Overview Slide 22

If dimming is required of a lighting system, one must consider this when selecting an LED driver. There are two predominantly used methods for dimming in North America. The first is line voltage dimming via phase-cutting with a TRIAC. This method is quite straight forward and is commonly used for dimming incandescent lamps. It is, however, much less commonly used for LED dimming as it requires a fair bit of extra engineering to design an LED driver that works effectively with these phase-cut waveforms. The second method is a 0-10 V 2-wire signal interface. This dimming protocol is commonly used for commercial fluorescent dimming in North America. Furthermore, as a result of its common usage, controls utilizing this protocol are widely available.
