The idea is to do continuous time processing where it makes sense to reduce the loading on the DSP. The example above is the LMV1088 Far Field Noise Suppression device which uses phased array microphones to remove background noise in real-time. The power consumed while doing this function in the analog domain is only 10% of that of the nearest DSP solution – a dramatic reduction in energy consumption. This is especially important in applications like remote sensing and homeland security where sensors may need to run off of energy harvesters or batteries for years without intervention.
