Both Altera and Xilinx offer power estimation tool spreadsheet calculators. These tools estimate the power requirements for the FPGA based upon the estimated resource usage of the designs and also summarizes all the FPGA’s power supply requirements in terms of voltage and current. In response, Texas Instruments created the WEBENCH Power Architect. This tool creates a multi-output power supply design based on user input parameters. A variety of solutions are offered in different architectures, which users can trade off against each other in terms of efficiency, footprint and total BOM cost. It calculates the performance of the solution in terms of operating values and builds upon the WEBENCH capabilities of optimizing footprint, efficiency, BOM cost and simulation capability. This tool also generates detailed reports for complete BOM and electrical performance for the design.
