What are some of the emerging applications utilizing energy harvesting technology? Tire pressure monitoring is an obvious place where harvestable energy exists, replacement of a battery is costly and power cords are not feasible. As mentioned before, portable electronic devices are a key area where extending run time is desired. In emerging nations, charging of a cell phone is problematic since power sources are not readily available. Here, energy harvesting becomes necessary and is more feasible than installing an electric grid. The last three pictures on this slide are related to wireless sensor networks. These are distributed networks that monitor physical parameters such as stress and fatigue for buildings and bridges, temperature, moisture, and humidity for offices as well as wineries and farms practicing precision agriculture. Wireless sensor networks also find application in factories which remotely monitor motors, weather, equipment, or processes.
