The second recently released device is the UCC25600, 8-pin resonant mode half bridge controller. This full featured device’s main benefit is its ability to achieve a high efficiency. Resonant mode controllers have soft switching topologies that nearly eliminate the losses from MOSFET switching. Eliminating these losses allows higher switching frequencies and smaller passive components. Additional features include a precise programmable, to with 50ns, dead time and a burst mode operation for low losses at light load or standby power modes. The main feature of the UCC25600 is that its operational frequency is bounded by a range from 30 to 350kHz. This bounded frequency feature prohibits the controller from operating at the higher frequencies which naturally occur as the load becomes lighter and lighter. Frequency bounding saves system cost by eliminating the need for over design since building a design capable of 1 or 2MHz operation requires quite a different level of expertise and requires more precision components.
