PI controllers have been around since the 1920s and are the defacto industry standard. PI controllers, if tuned properly, can perform really well, but that’s a big if. Tuning a pi controller is challenging. Designers have to understand and account for all of the variances in the system, and tune for these conditions. PI controllers typically require multiple tuning parameters to perform well over the entire operating range.
