Current Shunt Monitors Slide 4

Basic current measurement can easily be done with a regular differential instrumentation amplifier. However, the current shunt monitor has some unique properties that make it more attractive for this type of application. In contrast to a differential amplifier which typically has a common mode range two times the supply voltage, the current shunt monitor’s range is completely independent and can vary from -16V to +80V on a low 2.7V supply.
