Cable Specification Overview Slide 8

An overmold is the part that covers the joint between the connector and wire, to prevent the wire from bending or pulling at the solder joints, which could eventually lead to failure. The overmold also plays the secondary function of adding aesthetics to the cable. An overmold is more pleasant to see and touch than exposed solder joints.
