Non-Silicone Gap Fillers Slide 8

On this slide, some of the main areas and reasons why a non-silicone material are advantageous are shown. The traditional and first application was for the disk drive market. The top right picture shows a typical base station radio PCB where there has been silicone oil leaching from the gap filler. Over extended periods of time this leads to corrosion of the PCB, which can cause a significant reduction in product life time and performance. The bottom left picture shows the area of medical devices – these are often used in areas of critical patient care and therefore require a high degree of product stability and reliability. Furthermore, they are often used in demanding environments so the use of non-silicone is preferred. The final picture shows the application for laser based equipment.  In these applications silicone oils can condense on the optical system and cause catastrophic failure, therefore, non-silicone materials are preferred.
