powerSPIN Motor Control ICs Slide 16

Shown here is the simplified block diagram of a non-dissipative over current protection. No external sensing resistors are needed. This gives high accuracy and a non-dissipative solution with a cost-saving BOM. The working principle is very simple: the current of the power stage, sourced to the windings of the motor, is internally mirrored and compared with a reference current. Once the threshold current is reached, the driver is switched off for a time, fixed by the voltage charging time of the external capacitor connected to the enable pin.
