The dead time is basically the elapsed (or delay) time before a gate can be turned ON after the other gate was turned OFF. If a gate is turned ON before the other one is completely turned OFF, a short circuit between the DC bus and the ground is possible. To avoid this problem, a dead time forces the two bridges to be OFF for a given period of time.
