This slide shows the L6928 in operation in PWM and burst modes. Between each burst of pulses the consumption is 25 µA, reducing the average power loss. As a drawback, the frequency becomes load dependent and the output voltage has a large ripple, because the regulator turns on only when the Vout falls outside of regulation to restore the set Vout. This does not happen in PWM mode where there is a clean Vout, but a continuous switching activity increases the current consumption due to switching losses.
