The RNV has a special film treatment and moisture barrier coating process to allow the part to survive under high temperatures that would cause a standard metal film resistor to fail and have excessive resistance shifts. Failures of this type are particularly frustrating because they are latent failure modes that are not typically detectible during the manufacturing and assembly of the end product.
