By adding the DC/DC converter, the supply voltage and the supply current to the MCU is held constant. This provides a steady supply voltage regardless of the battery voltages. Because the converter holds this low voltage, the MCU minimizes power consumption even more. This can be seen in the plot denoted by the star. When the battery is fully charged the MCU consumes the minimum amount of power.
