As is shown in this block diagram, the Wireless Gecko is a full featured MCU and wireless SoC. The most important thing to understand on this diagram is the color coding system. All of the blue shaded blocks can operate in sleep modes, which dramatically reduces power consumption. Note that vast majority of blocks on the chip fall into this category. EM0 stands for Energy Mode 0 and represents the MCU being fully powered. The Wireless Gecko can enter into five additional energy modes with each mode requiring less power than the previous. As the Wireless Gecko transitions into the sleep modes, peripherals are gradually disabled. Because of this technology the gecko is able to perform a good deal of tasks without waking up the core or other unnecessary peripherals, allowing developers more flexibility to implement energy efficient tasks.
