If a customer is just getting started in wireless design, developing an IoT application using a module can be a much faster and more cost effective route to market. Part of the wireless gecko value proposition is that a customer could start designing with a module and use that design for initial volumes, 10’s of thousands of units perhaps, and could then migrate at a later time to an SoC design to reduce costs for higher volumes – all done using the same software stacks and development tools available in Simplicity Studio. This is a much more efficient overall solution – enabling designers to pick the best solution for their needs for time to market, system costs, development and code reuse. Silicon Labs has an whitepaper titled “Six Hidden Costs in a 99 Cent Wireless SoC” to help developers work out if an SoC or Module is the right choice for their application.
