A common method of implementing mains line monitoring is with the use of discrete components. Current transformers provide the sensor and the isolation elements of the circuit. However, these require a selection of other discrete components in order to operate effectively and interface with a separate ADC for conversion to digital. Current transformers, in particular, are often a problem in size constrained systems, especially in terms of height. In contrast, the Si890x can perform the isolation and digital conversion in a single, small, short package. Compared to other stand alone ADCs, the integrated isolation of the Si890x is a big benefit. Other ADCs still require some type of isolation in the system to interface with a controller. The integrated isolation of the Si890x allows for a single device connection between the high-voltage side and the low voltage sides of the system. There are other isolated ADCs available on the market. However, these products were created for a different market than mains line monitoring. Namely, they are targeted towards higher frequency switching and motor control applications. As such, the feature set, and subsequently the cost, are not appropriate for the SMPS/power conversion market. The Si890x is the only isolated product competitively priced for this market.
