The extra diode shown in the diagram on the left was used for ESD suppression in previous generations of stepper motor drivers. However, under certain conditions, active signals on the control lines could pass through this diode and lead to a situation where the IC would operate when it was supposed to be in an off state. In current products, the circuitry was modified to maintain ample ESD protection while eliminating the ghost supply path.
