The first problem is that customer’s documentation in their manufacturing environment is typically either too high-level to be useful day-by-day, or is not kept up-to-date due to the time required to do so. At an IT level they will see the access and distribution layer switches. The management tools typically do not see the devices beyond that, due to the waterfalls of unmanaged switches, hubs, and Ethernet device ring and bus networks common to automation. The customer may also have a drawing of the as-built network that is out of date soon after the drawing is complete.
