Shown on this slide is an example of how to become successful. The competitor has two devices to drive 24 V forward/reverse brush motors in the industrial and cash machines. These are quite old models, but when they were developed, there were very few 24 V H-bridge drivers that could support 2 to 3 A. Because they were first, they became the standard. As previously mentioned, once a part is designed into applications in these industries, it can last a long time. The customer will still find designs using these parts today. These ICs were targeted with the DMOS process to drastically enhance their performance, giving the equipment designers a good reason to re-evaluate their designs. Many designers were doubtful that such a small part could support so much current. Looking at the packages in the upper right corner, the competitor’s parts dwarf the SANYO equivalents. Once the customers realized that the technology in the SANYO part was developed twenty years after what was used in their current designs, they began to switch over.
