These are some of the potential automotive applications for RTCs. In navigation systems, keeping time when the navigation is switched off allows for a faster restart when the navigation system is switched on again. Certain countries have legislation to avoid truck drivers from working too long hours, which would increase the accident risk. A tachograph can be used to record vehicle speed and whether the vehicle is stationary or not. An RTC can provide superior accuracy and low power consumption for tachograph devices. RTCs can also be used in hybrid cars to manage battery power and in electronic road pricing systems to record accurate time references and time stamps. All modern cars are equipped with on board diagnostics, which required accurate time stamping of certain events.
