An alternative method to ensure that inputs never float is to use devices with built-in bus-hold circuits. The bus-hold circuit latches in the last logic state that was applied to the input pin. If the source driving the input pin is removed or disabled, the bus-hold circuit continues to hold the CMOS input buffer at either VCC or ground. The delta ICC is reduced to zero and there is no risk of unwanted switching or oscillation. Devices with built-in bus-hold reduce the bill of materials and footprint of a design by eliminating the need for external components.
