TN (Twisted Nematic) TFTs are the most common type of TFT used in a wide variety of applications. They are used in products such as computer monitors, televisions, and medical devices, and tend to be less expensive than MVA and IPS displays. Within TN technology, the polarization angles are perpendicular to each other, with the top polarizer having negative electrodes and the bottom polarizer having positive electrodes. When the pixel is in an off state, the liquid crystals are parallel to the plane. When energized, the liquid crystals twist down towards their respective charges and become perpendicular to the plane (see diagram above). The twisting of the liquid crystals causes the light to bend, allowing the backlight to shine through. The viewing angle of the display is determined by how the light bends.
