Many Microchip clock and data distribution products come with the Fail-Safe Input (FSI) feature. With a regular buffer if there is no signal or an invalid signal present at the input, there is an invalid signal or noise at the output. FSI buffers, on the other hand, latch the output to the last valid level when an invalid signal is detected at the input. FSI prevents metastable conditions and prevents errors in the system.
