Product List
The advantages of the low side current sensing include ease of design, the amplifier only requires a low input common mode voltage, and the output voltage is always referenced to ground. The disadvantages of low side current sensing include the load is not connected to ground, and the amplifier cannot detect short circuit or high load currents. The advantages of the high side current sensing include 1. the load is always connected to ground and 2. short circuit or high load currents can be detected. The disadvantages of high side current sensing include the risk of operating the amplifier over the supply voltage, caused by high input common mode voltage. By using a Current Sense Amplifier such as the MAX44284 the engineer can implement high side current sensing and overcome the disadvantages discussed here benefiting from the ICs high input common mode voltage and low operating voltage VDD.
