In the low-side technique shown here in the left hand side figure, the sense resistor connects in series with the ground path. With the high-side technique shown in the right hand side figure, the sense resistor connects in series with the positive power-supply voltage. The two techniques pose trade-offs in different areas which are discussed on the following slide.
